Illumination beneath the Waves workshop

Take a deep-dive into the many colours and forms found in local hidden ocean habitats.
This creative workshop will be using techniques of collage and illumination and explore graphic shape, layout, symbols and icons to create your own glowing artwork which will tell its own story about your relationship with the ocean.
This workshop is free and art materials are provided.

Ever wondered what’s hidden beneath the Jaywick waves? Do you want to dip your toes into the wonder of marine life?
Join Professor Graham Underwood from the University of Essex to explore the diversity of local ocean wildlife and habitats linked to the ARKADE project. Graham will also introduce you to his research which takes him on international expeditions to wild and remote places.
This marine inspired talk will include a Q and A facilitated by artists INSTAR.

Wild Bright Activism workshop

A wildly fun and creative workshop which will harbour your inner activist. You will explore creative writing, poster design, colour and graphic art to create striking and impactful ‘protest placard’ artworks to then be illuminated. Putting a spotlight on the challenges and opportunities facing our coastal communities as well as our oceans at a time of rapid climate change and rising sea levels, your art will find a powerful voice for you community and your natural neighbours.

Artforms of the Ocean TALK

Join INSTAR, artists Trish Evans and Nick Humphreys, to discover the many different and incredible artforms found in the ocean and how nature beneath the waves provides a wealth of inspiration for art and creativity.
INSTAR will also share how coastal lifeforms and ecosystems in ESSEX and our relationship with the sea is inspiring the ARKADE project.

Shoreline sketching

Meet on the beach next to (yellow) Beach Bar
Near Badminton Road (off Broadway)
Join us for this fun shoreline sketch and strandline safari event. We will guide you through simple creative drawing techniques in composition, tone and texture, using pencil and pens. Starting at the yellow Beach Bar we will walk along the beach and also take a closer look at strandline treasures and coastal plant life to inspire our sketches and also take photographs.
All materials will be provided free.
This event will depend on dry weather. Alternative arrangements will be organised if it is raining.
Suitable for all ages and interests. No experience necessary.

Join us for this creative workshop which takes inspiration from natural, as well as human-made, structures. In this workshop we will explore ideas of survival, resilience and protection, creating a collection of visual shadow/silhouette-based artworks. Using patterns and shapes inspired by natural forms, each artwork will be illuminated to create a large collective arkwork, symbolic of community strength and protection.

Off shore expedition

Brightlingsea Harbour

Join the ARKADE crew for this boat trip along the estuary to discover ocean science, wildlife and the wonder of the Essex Coastline.
This enjoyable 2 hour trip will include species identification and offer you the opportunity to find out more what natural efforts are talking place to help restore the seabed and help ecosystems.
